I feel like I’ve been harking on how amazing (on so many different levels) thrifting is but have never given you guys context or reasons why I thrift. So today’s the day!
I've been thrifting pretty much the entirety of my life. Even before it was the "cool thing" to do. I remember avoiding clothing questions in HS like where I got my clothes because I didn't want to explain that it wasn't new & previously used.
My family didn't have much starting off in this country and my mom being the resourceful woman she is, sought out these stores called "sugundas" which is roughly translated to secondhand. She would buy clothes and housewares for our family because there was no means to buy retail-shit was too expensive.
Ps. We LOVE to go thrift store shopping together!
Fast forward to 2019, I thrift for a variety of reasons. One of the main reasons is that I want to minimize the amount of damage that my family and I contribute to the world. And no, I'm not perfect in any sense ( I still would love to reduce plastic use) but this is the way I fit sustainability into my lifestyle. Fashion is a huge part of my life, hell I own a (pre-owned) clothing business! So I knew this is where I could make the most impact.
I'm sure you've heard, fast fashion is the number one contributor of clothes that end up in landfills.
An average of 70 pounds per person, annually. About 85% of this waste goes to landfills where it occupies about 5% of landfill space and the amount is growing.
Thrifting gives clothes that would otherwise go to a landfill and take ages to decompose (if it does at all-hello, synthetic fibers!) a new life.
Another huge reason, to be completely honest, I'm a sucker for a good bargain! There's just something about it, it's really hard to explain but once you're hooked, it's pretty hard to go back to paying those retail prices. Because thrifting is inexpensive, I have more variety
My goal with Thrill of the Luxe is that I change your mind about pre-loved clothing. I hope that you choose to buy pre-loved before you buy retail.
Do you thrift? If so, tell me why you thrift!
